How to deal with rotten wood
Over time, humidity and wear rotten the joinery. To prevent them from decomposing completely, it is sufficient to treat the rotten wood. Here are the steps to follow.
Wood not only rots outdoors from water and temperature changes, it can rot anywhere, whenever there is humidity, even indoors. The formation of fungus or dry rot on wood can be found equally well on wooden doors or windows, exterior or interior wooden furniture, a terrace, and even on beams inside a home. The rotting is easy to recognize: the wood turns brown, reddish to black, its texture is softer, and if painted, its paint peels. Rotten wood also tends to swell because it is too filled with water. It is therefore important to treat as soon as you notice that your wood is starting to rot, otherwise, you will not be able to repair it and it will have to be replaced.
Step 1: preparation and cleaning of the wooden surface to be treated
• Firstly, strip the surface to be treated by gently scraping with wood chisels.
• Then level the surface, still with wood chisels.
• Do not insist if your wood is too wet. If this turns out to be the case, cover it with plastic wrap and let it dry for a week. In case the humidity is not so great, use the heat gun.
Step 2: treat rotten wood
• Now apply the hardener with a brush. Then leave to dry for half a day.
• In case your surface has a few holes, use wood filler to fill in. Even out and smooth with a painter’s knife.
• Let dry then sand the wood to even out. Brush to remove dust.
• Now apply with a brush a layer of wood treatment product, preferably colorless.
• If you wish, you can paint the wood with any paint you like. We recommend glycero paint.
